How to Choose a Coffee Table: Size, Shape & Style
Share
A coffee table ties a living room together — when it’s the right size. Too big and the room feels crowded; too small and it looks lost. Here’s how to nail it.
1. Size it to your sofa
Aim for a table about two‑thirds the length of your sofa. It should feel proportional, not dwarfed or dominant.
2. Match the height to your seat
The tabletop should sit level with, or an inch or two below, your sofa cushions — so drinks and books are within easy reach.
3. Pick a shape for your space
Round or oval tables (no sharp corners) suit small rooms, tight walkways and homes with kids. Rectangular tables suit longer sofas and bigger rooms.
4. Choose material and storage
Warm wood and soft, fluted fronts keep things calm and Japandi. Drawers or a lower shelf hide the remote‑and‑coaster clutter.
5. See it with your sofa first
